3 Resources

Professor Cox,

Here are my three resourses. Hope you enjoy! :)

1) Technology in the Classroom:Friend or Foe

This article talks focuses on the view students have on technology, and how much they feel it is effective. Those students who feel technoogy is a friend, felt that using technology, such as Powerpoint and Blackboard(as the article points out) helped their learning. On the other hand, with the foe part of it, the article states, "Thus, using technology in the classroom may hinder a student's understanding of course material rather than enhance it." So, I enjoyed this article because it focused on the influence technology can have on students, both positive and negative. The article gives reasons why technology could be a friend. For example, the article says how PowerPoint provides both structure to and clarification of material to a lecture. Some students are visual learners (as the article talks about), like myself, and through powerpoint(or other technology-based learning), are able to learn more effectively. The article also talked about a survey/study they took, and included the findings on it as well. One of the things it showed was how powerpoint is not the only way to teach using technology. Technology use can include, and be affective, by using blackboard, on-line course activities, videos and programs.I really enjoyed this article, because it talked about the pro's and con's of using technology in the classroom, and what kind of technology can be effective in helping students learn the most.

2) Towards a framework for understanding electronic educational gaming.

I enjoyed this article, because it focuses on games, and how they can be effective for students in their learning. I love this, because as a physical education major, there are great games students could play to have fun, and learn some basic skills.
One of the things stated in the article, was by Piaget. It says, "Symbolic engagement supports the development of abstract thought through the opportunities it affords for practicing mental processes within a non-threatening context. Games through technology are a great way for students to engage in a learning process, but not be threatened by it. As a P.E. teacher, I wouldn't use this a lot, because I want to focus on being active; but these games could help the learning process, and possibly help students who may be struggling, because the article states how using electronic games are effective, by stating, "Electronic games promote dynamic cognitive activity as a player confronts challenges to be solved and obstacles to overcome that draw upon problem solving, reasoning, and strategizing skills."

3) Technology and Physical Education (January 7 , 2002,Vol. 4, No.1)

This article is great for any teacher! It gives, as the article states, "focus on various ways to incorporate technology with a public relations issue to bridge the communication gap between teachers, students, parents, community and the administration." It gives great ways on how technology can be used in education. It gives an example of "Feedback Video." This would be great for Physical Education, as it allows students to view their skills, what needs to be improved and what they're performing well. This way, not only can you as a teacher give the feedback, but the student can see why you are giving them that feedback. It also gives teaching ideas (tech tips). These are:
PC Placement, PC Planning, Computer Activities, TV Connections, Store Web Pages Offline. This article also gives ways on how to use the Notebook Applications. The other thing I love about this article, is it gives a website where games can be played to see where students are at in relation to sports. It states, "ESPN can be used to challenge the students knowledge of sport questions and answers in an interactive setting." This would be a great tool for me as a physical education teacher, and that website it specifically for physical education.

Reflection

Web quests are great to help students explore, work as a team and learn and understand technology better. I thoroughly enjoyed working on the Web quest, as well as learning a lot from it, which I will talk about later, with what I did learn. The task was not easy; it required thinking reflection, research, team work, etc. Web quests are a great way of helping the students and teachers build a knowledge of technology, research (how to) and working as a team. Being able to work as a group on this Web quest was wonderful. We were all able to contribute to the Web quest. I enjoyed how we were all able to come up with great and different ideas, which contributed to the Web quest, and helped the task become more effective.
Web quests are not a simple task, both for the teacher and the student. The web quest required a good deal thinking, researching, knowledge and teamwork. Through this experience nonetheless, we, as a group, were able to get to know each other better, and compliment one another.
I would love to perform a web quest in my physical education classes. I feel it would be a great tool to help the children understand the importance of health and fitness. It would also help them know how to work as a team/group, which could help them in the future as they experience adult life, and go on to college and careers. Through the research I was able to do for the web quest, I was able to discover information, and gain important knowledge I didn’t know before. Therefore, if I as a future teacher for physical education was able to acquire a small amount of such important data; how much more key should it be for the students to be able to do the same.
It was simple to be able to transfer our information from our google documents to the web quest. But, some parts were more difficult to perform, such as
I believe having more time to prepare a web quest would help a web quest be more efficient. The more knowledge on the topic which is acquired by the teacher, the more the student will understand their task, and know where to go and what to do to complete the task successfully. I suppose having a greater knowledge of how to transfer information (to the web quest), being able to use hyperlinks and knowing what sources will be the most efficient and valuable, would be more helpful with assisting me having a more effective web quest.
Even though I am going to be a physical education teacher, having a strong knowledge of technology would be a great benefit. As I have more knowledge of how to use technology, I would be more effective in planning a web quest for my classes. I would be able to gain more knowledge through classes, other teachers and even the internet itself. Web quest is a great tool in helping students show their strengths, while yet, improving their weakness, or skills that will help them in the future. Web quest is also a great tool in helping teachers sees the students’ strengths, and also knowing what areas their students need work on; while yet, as a group the students can help each other improve on their weakness, and continue to develop their strengths, through helping each other out.

Publisher

Professor Cox,

This will be a great website to use as a teacher. It excites me to know I have these resources! Hope this is what you were wanting. Here are my five ideas to use in Physical Education:

1)Award Certificates to use for when my students accomplish a certain skill, or fulfill a certian requirement, such as the sit-up/push-up test.

2)Calenders would be great to use to let students, as well as parents know of specific events that will be occuring, such as the PE Extravaganza(something we had at my school). It would also be good to use for the students to be reminded of what we'll be working on each day that we have PE, so they'll be well prepared.

3)Newsletters could be used to help parents stay updated on what their kids are doing in their Physical Education. It could also be used to remind parents of any special event we'll be having, in which they could attend, or help out at.

4)Signs could be used to keep the students excited and interested. It could also be used for direction purposes. For example, have a sign that's says bathroom and have an arrow pointing their :), or a sign that says "Don't give up," or something silly, like "Only Fun Kids Allowed."

5)Email would be great to use to keep in touch with the parents. I would be useful for parents, anytime they may have a concern, or question. It would also be great for the teacher, in case they had concerns, questions, or positive comments about the student, that they needed to speak with the parents about.

Journal Resources

Professor Cox,

Here are my three resources. I searched many different places. I really enjoyed/liked these articles the best, and felt they were focused a lot on things I've been learning this semester, and that will benefit me in helping my students learning to their fullest potential, with the help of technology(both through them and me as the teacher).

1)1) http://thejournal.com/the/newsletters/thefocus/archives/?aid=17682

I loved this resource. It gave four different scenarios. It talked about Discovery Health Connection, which consists of different PE or Health sites for teachers. The one I was familiar with, and the article talked about was PE Central. This article gave statistics on children(concerning drinking, smoking), and used that to show how a teacher could use technology to help students learn the importance of their health/not drinking and smoking. This article helped me understand how many great resources there are to find lesson plans, video's, background info.(on subjects such as smoking), handouts, media, resources, surveys, quizzes and streaming videos. Many times teacher's done' have a lot of time to plan. For example, in the article it talked about a teacher catching some students smoking. She had class in thirty minutes, but wanted to be able to teach these kids the importance of not smoking. The wonderful resources (would) help this teacher in this situation, within a short amount of time. This article was the most affective for me, and even had different websites that I could go to for information needed to teach a physical education class on whatever topic I wanted, such as Physical Activity, Nutrition and the body.

2)http://thejournal.com/articles/16754

I really enjoyed this article too. This article focused on kids with disabilities and the affect/influence technology can have on those children. The beginning of the article talks about parents who had two kids with disabilities, who attended a school called, "The Bridge School. "The Bridge School uses augmentative and alternative means of communication and assistive technology applications to help these kids communicate." These parents had seen how much this school/applications had helped their children improve/succeed. The school's are improving in having textbooks, or school material's online, for kids with disabilities, so they can better learn. The article talked about how teaching/helping kids with disabilities is more expensive then those who aren't. The one thing I loved about this article was how focused they were on helping kids with disabilities, in learning to their fullest potential, and making sure they don't have to struggle. When I read this article, I thought of love.

3) http://thejournal.com/articles/16574

This article was based on PE Central. It helped emphasize what it was about, and how beneficial PE Central is, which is a website. This website is a great resource for teachers. It not only helps them find great lesson plans for their physical education classes, but their able to access "interactive guides, to help keep track of physical activity. PE Central gives ways(lesson plans) to help teachers who have students with disabilities, on knowing how to best help that student. PE Central is a great because it's for PreK through twelfth grade. The PE Central Site has access to outside links as well, to help teacher's find/gain more knowledge to help them in their teaching strategies/lesson plans. PE Central also helps teachers to know or keep up on the standards they have to adhere to. Through PE Central, students can be greatly blessed, because this site helps teachers be more effective teachers, and therefore, helping students learn to the best of their ability, and being able to reach their full potential. So, this article focuses more on technology being a blessing for the teacher, but because of this, it is a huge help and benefit to the students, and gives them an opportunity to learn and have fun.

Embedding Games on My Blog

Here is my game that I embedded. I chose this one because it could be fun for all ages. I even enjoyed it. I'm planning on teaching high school, (but I may also plan on teaching the elementary age as well)but it was hard to find a game that was centered on that age. This game could help students w/ reaction time, timing (seeing what it takes to get the timing down), and it's a fun way to play sports on the computer.

Baseball Game
Play Games at AddictingGames

I chose a second one too. I chose this one because jump roping is a skill that is always used/practiced in physical education. So, what better then to get to practice at home.
